Anthology Geographies of Coloniality
Histories of global inequalities
The anthology Geographies of Coloniality – Histories of Global Inequalities, edited by Sybille Bauriedl and Inken Carstensen-Egwuom, both from the Department of Integrative Geography at the University of Flensburg, was published in September 2023.
Colonialism is a historical, a contemporary and a geographical issue. The contributors to this volume combine these three perspectives and show the relevance of the spatial and social power relations of colonialism in the present. This continuity, known as ‘coloniality’, is evident in the production of knowledge, in public debates, in the shape of European cities, in local struggles and in international policy fields. This edited volume brings together contributions from geography and urban studies, drawing on research approaches from Black Studies, Postcolonial Studies and Decolonial Studies.

The anthology also contains contributions that deal with Flensburg’s colonial entanglements. For example, Sybille Bauriedl and Inken Carstensen-Egwuom, in the introduction to the anthology (‘Perspectives on geographies of coloniality’), look at the monument I am Queen Mary, which commemorates the colonial ties between Denmark and the Caribbean in Copenhagen and is also representative of a Caribbean perspective on Flensburg’s colonial entanglements in Flensburg. Inken Carstensen-Egwum’s paper ‘Coloniality of sugar cane – plantation economies, racial capitalism and explorations of reparative justice’ looks at Flensburg’s rum and sugar production and, building on the concept of racial capitalism, traces colonial links from Flensburg to plantation economies in the Caribbean.
