Resolution on coming to terms with Flensburg’s colonial past in the Culture Committee
In May 2022, Flensburg’s cultural committee unanimously passed a resolution to come to terms with Flensburg’s colonial past. Among other things, the resolution calls on the administration to create a memorial for colonialism. Possible locations are to be considered as part of the design of the new shoreline part. In addition, a town twinning with the town of Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas (a former Danish colony) should be sought, and the permanent exhibition ‘Sugar Rum Enslavement’ at the Flensburg Maritime Museum should be revised. In the short term, colonial entanglements are to be thematised at the stations of the “Rum & Sugar Mile” and on city tours. The Network Flensburg Postcolonial is also mentioned in the application: regular exchanges are to take place and the city is to support the network in its work if necessary.
