Gallery of monuments to colonial history on the harbour promenade
From mid August 2025 until early January 2026, 15 posters depicting monuments from European cities were hanging on the construction fence at the harbour edge in Flensburg. All 15 monuments on display are memorial sites commemorating the colonial ties of European cities, slavery and resistance, and serve as reminders of the lasting effects of the exploitation of people and nature through colonialism.
Flensburg’s urban history and structure are also closely intertwined with Danish colonialism in the Caribbean. A monument at the edge of the harbour – exactly where the construction fence now stands and where the hub of the so-called ‘West India trade’ was located in the 18th and 19th centuries – could be an important step towards remembering this history and its lasting effects. This intervention by the network at the harbour promenade is intended to encourage reflection on a monument in Flensburg. All 15 monuments can also be found permanently on our website with some additional information.
