Luisa Ascending – Violence in the colonies
In her exhibition ‘Luisa Ascending’, Felisha Maria Carenage explores the story of 14-year-old Luisa Calderón, who lived in Trinidad in the Caribbean at the beginning of the 19th century. In the early 19th century, images of the tortured 14-year-old Luisa Calderón caused a sensation in Britain: They showed the violence that had remained hidden from Europeans but was part of everyday life in the colonised territories. The exhibition is an attempt to explore how this violence relates to our reality in the here and now. The brochure developed as part of the exhibition provides an insight into possible answers to this question. In it, Felisha Maria Carenage and Inken Carstensen-Egwuom explore the connection between Luisa’s story and Flensburg’s involvement in Danish, German and British colonialism.
